Summary

"The Secret Glory" by Arthur Machen is an early 20th-century story about a young boy's search for his place in the world, but his spirit clashes with what society expects from him. The story follows Ambrose Meyrick at his school as he deals with difficult teachers like his uncle, Mr. Horbury. At the start, Ambrose is punished by his uncle for being late after visiting Selden Abbey, which shows how much Ambrose cares about history. Mr. Horbury is very strict with his punishments, causing harm to Ambrose, with the school representing the culture Ambrose must grow in, or grow out of. This sets up the external and also internal battles Ambrose faces as he tries to discover who he is, and how he wants to live.
