Summary

"The Rise and Fall of Nauvoo" by B. H. Roberts is a late 19th-century historical record, detailing the story of Nauvoo, Illinois, and the early Latter-day Saints under Joseph Smith. It tells how this group tried to make a home for themselves while dealing with hardship and unfair treatment for their religious views. Beginning as a companion to a previous book, the story presents Nauvoo as a key location on the Mississippi River that grew into a center for the Latter-day Saints. The narrative emphasizes the importance of the city’s rise as a symbol of religious freedom and strength, while also foreshadowing the challenges and eventual departure of its people due to increasing conflict.

About the Author

Brigham Henry Roberts was a historian, politician, and leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He edited the seven-volume History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and independently wrote the six-volume Comprehensive History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Roberts also wrote Studies of the Book of Mormon—published posthumously—which discussed the validity of the Book of Mormon as an ancient record. Roberts was denied a seat as a member of United States Congress because of his practice of polygamy.
