Summary

"Indians of the Yosemite Valley and Vicinity" by Galen Clark is a historical record which examines the lives of Native American tribes in and around Yosemite Valley. Penned in the early 1900s, the book shares the traditions, ways, and past events of these groups. Clark, a key person in California's story and a protector of Yosemite, uses his experiences to illustrate the troubles these tribes dealt with as more settlers came and changed their world. The book begins by introducing Clark and his long-term connection to the Yosemite Indians. He reflects on the quick disappearance of these tribes because of battles and sickness brought by the settlers. Clark aims to carefully document the culture, beliefs, and effects of colonial spread on their lives before their history fades away, promising a mix of personal reminders and deep cultural understanding.
