Summary

"The Black Border: Gullah Stories of the Carolina Coast" by Ambrose E. Gonzales, is a compilation of narratives from the beginning of the 1900s that gives a glimpse into the Gullah culture through their way of life and rich storytelling customs of African Americans residing along the Carolina shore, as told through the use of characters and short stories. Beginning with an introduction establishing a foundation of the Gullah people, their history, and the growth of their interesting dialect. The first story presents a funny man who goes by the name of Joe Fields who brags about his master's background as he deals with his current existence. With tales that focus on pride, identity, and the lasting impact of when slavery was, the introduction gets readers invested into the world of the Gullah.
