Summary

"The Lives of the Twelve Caesars, Volume 07: Galba" by Suetonius is an ancient biography that explores the life of the Roman Emperor Galba, detailing his path to the throne after Nero. The book looks at Galba's respected family, military accomplishments, and the signs that were said to predict his rule. It shows how Galba was first liked by the people, but then reveals the harshness and strictness of his rule, and how he lost the support of the army, which led to his death. Suetonius examines both Galba's choices as a leader and his personal life, painting a picture of a complicated man driven by desires, luck, and bad luck, which all played a part in his short and chaotic time as the leader of Rome.

About the Author

Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, commonly referred to as Suetonius, was a Roman historian who wrote during the early Imperial era of the Roman Empire. His most important surviving work is De vita Caesarum, commonly known in English as The Twelve Caesars, a set of biographies of 12 successive Roman rulers from Julius Caesar to Domitian. Other works by Suetonius concerned the daily life of Rome, politics, oratory, and the lives of famous writers, including poets, historians, and grammarians. A few of these books have partially survived, but many have been lost.
