The secret spring

"The Secret Spring" by Pierre Benoît is a story set in the tense years before World War I, following Lieutenant Vignerte's journey from the grim battlefields to the treacherous German court of Lautenburg-Detmold. It begins with Vignerte taking command of a company during the war reflecting on his bond with a fellow officer and his abandoned academic dreams. The novel is filled with youthful ambition, camaraderie, and the dangerous allure of court life against a backdrop of impending global conflict.

Pierre Benoit was a French novelist, screenwriter and member of the Académie française. He is perhaps best known for his second novel L'Atlantide (1919) that has been filmed several times.
