Summary

"The Scripture Club of Valley Rest; or, Sketches of Everybody's Neighbours" by John Habberton is a story about a new church and its congregation finding its footing in the village of Valley Rest. At the heart of it all is the Scripture Club, started by Mr. Buffle, where members share their different ideas about religion and what is right and wrong. The book opens with the Second Church of Valley Rest celebrating the creation of the Scripture Club, though it came about because people had different beliefs. In the first meeting, members enthusiastically talk about what spiritual things mean and how to understand the Bible. The story shows how old-fashioned ideas clash with new ones, and how that tests the members' faith and what they believe, while exposing their inside battles and views on life.
