Summary

"A House Divided Against Itself; vol. 3 of 3" by Mrs. Oliphant is a story from long ago that keeps digging into tricky relationships and feelings. At the heart of it all is George Gaunt, a soldier caught between his love for Constance Waring and what society expects of him. We see George visiting Lady Markham, dealing with the past that hangs over him, especially his feelings for Constance. Frances also has feelings for George which makes things even more tangled, but Constance doesn't seem to care about the mess she's causing in George's heart. Lady Markham is worried that their interactions could lead to trouble and sees a fight brewing between what people want and what they're supposed to do, showing the book is all about love, doing your duty, and giving up things for others.
