Summary

"The World Before Them: A Novel. Volume 3 (of 3)" by Susanna Moodie is a historical novel that explores how tricky relationships, what society expects, and the results of lies can be. Dorothy, Gilbert Rushmere, and Gilbert's wife Sophy are important people in the book. Following their marriages, the characters deal with a lot of emotional problems because of their pasts being all mixed up together. The story starts with everyone at Heath Farm being stressed out because Gilbert and Sophy are married. During a dinner that happens, the way everyone talks to each other shows there is jealousy and sadness there, especially when it comes to old relationships from the past. Gilbert feels bad about himself and misses Dorothy at the same time, while Sophy worries about not being good enough because Dorothy is around. The story will go on to reveal what happens to people who are dealing with love, being loyal, and living up to what society expects.
