Summary

"Promenades of an Impressionist" by James Huneker is a critical review of artists from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book examines the lives, work, and context of prominent artists--such as Cézanne, Rodin, and others--and their impact on society. The texts start with Huneker's critique of the Paris Autumn Salon, emphasizing Cézanne's importance to modern art and how his influence caused younger artists to move away from traditional artistic values. The book explores the revolutionary changes in art at the time, showing both admiration and criticism of the artists who changed the art world and how the artists responded to the criticism.

About the Author

James Gibbons Huneker was an American art, book, music, and theater critic. A colorful individual and an ambitious writer, he was "an American with a great mission," in the words of his friend, the critic Benjamin De Casseres, and that mission was to educate Americans about the best cultural achievements, native and European, of his time. From 1892 to 1899, he was the husband of the sculptor Clio Hinton.
