Summary

"December Love" by Robert Hichens is a story centered around Alick Craven, a Foreign Office employee drawn into the orbit of the elusive Lady Adela Sellingworth by his perceptive friend, Francis Braybrooke. Lady Sellingworth, a former star of London society, now lives in seclusion. The story explores getting older, the importance of beauty, and how people chase love, all seen through Lady Sellingworth's choices and mysterious history. Early in the story, Craven has a conversation with Braybrooke at a London club where Braybrooke shares details about the lady. Craven learns of her jewels and is intrigued by her calmness after the theft. He is invited to tea with her; the author hints at bigger feelings to come throughout the novel.
