"Way of the Lawless" by Max Brand, is a Western tale set in the American West and tells the story of Andy Lanning, raised by a tough blacksmith, Jasper Lanning. Andy struggles with his kind heart, which goes against the violence of the world around him. The book begins by showing the difficult bond between Jasper and Andy, where Jasper tries to teach Andy to be strong through riding and shooting but fails because Andy is too gentle. When Andy is faced with Buck Heath, a local bully, he is pushed too far, and unexpectedly fights back, accidentally hurting Heath and becoming a fugitive. He is transformed from a young man into someone trying to survive, which leads to a story about identity, right and wrong, and survival in a harsh place.
