Summary

"Destiny" by Charles Neville Buck is a story about a family named Burton, and it looks closely at the lives of two brothers, Ham and Paul, and their sister Mary, while showing their journey out of being poor farmers. The story looks at what it means to want something more, to know who you are, and to try to find a better life when you are struggling with yourself and the world around you. At the beginning, Paul Burton is a kid who loves music but finds trouble at school and has a hard time with his brother, Ham. His brother Ham is strong and wants to be successful, and he wants to leave the farm to make something of himself. The start of the book shows how different the brothers are and what they want. As Ham says he wants to leave to become someone important, Paul just wants people to like him and understand his music. The problems get even bigger because of money issues, making the fight between wanting to be somebody and doing what you have to for your family even harder.
