Summary

"The Jewish Religion" by M. Friedländer is a detailed exploration of Judaism, probably penned in the late 1800s, which strives to explain the central beliefs and customs of the Jewish faith, using Biblical writings and Rabbinic custom. The author tries to lay out Jewish religious ideas and the reasons for those beliefs, offering understanding to those wanting to know about their faith. Early in the text, the author thinks about how important faith is in Judaism, introducing the idea that religion includes belief in a greater power and the responsibilities that come with that belief. Friedländer stresses that it's important to understand one's faith by looking at both reason and tradition, highlighting the importance of understanding Divine teachings in a way that makes sense with both thinking and spiritual promise. He says that this work will be a guide for people who want to better understand Judaism, both in thinking and in practice.
