"Cruel as the Grave" by Mrs. Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte Southworth is a story set in the South that shows how love can be tested by life’s difficulties. It follows Lyon and Sybil Berners, who are very much in love after their honeymoon; however, Sybil already worries that something bad will happen and that she will lose Lyon's love. When they arrive at an inn and have tea, you can feel that something is wrong. The story also includes John Lyon Howe, who is a lawyer and also has feelings for Sybil. The reader learns about the complicated pasts and emotions of those involved in the lovers' lives and hint at the tragedies to come As Lyon and Sybil try to make a home together, they get caught up in the problems of others, which causes even more drama and emotional challenges for the couple.
