Summary

"Hello, Soldier!" by Edward Dyson is a collection of poems that pulls back the curtain on the lives of soldiers during World War I. Told through the eyes of an Australian, the poems paint a picture of their bravery, losses, and friendships against the backdrop of war’s grim reality. The collection kicks off with the poem "Australia," celebrating the nation's courage and strength as it steps onto the world stage through war. From there, the verses capture the everyday lives of soldiers, their experiences and emotions on topics ranging from acts of courage to their deepest longings for home. With words that feel true to the soldiers thanks to its use of Australian slang, Dyson gives readers a way to experience war from the trenches.
