Summary

"Prince Hagen" by Upton Sinclair is a play that mixes ancient myth with the real-world struggles of early 20th-century America. The story follows Prince Hagen, grandson of the Nibelung King Alberich, as he steps into a world of power and wealth. We are introduced to Gerald Isman, a poet who encounters mysterious characters like Mimi, shrouded in mythical connections. The narrative kicks off in a primeval forest and quickly moves to Nibelheim, revealing themes of ambition and manipulation. Hagen, a complicated character with both Nibelung and human blood, is called upon by his grandfather, King Alberich, setting the stage for a tale where ancient myths collide with modern social problems and the clash of ideals.
