Summary

"The South and the National Government" by William H. Taft is a speech focusing on the state of politics in the South after the Civil War. Taft talks about how the South has been cut off politically and points to the history of slavery as a major reason. He stresses the need for the North and South to come together, pushing for everyone to be included in politics, no matter their background, and for both parts of the country to help each other do well. Taft wants the South to rethink its political ties, fight for equal rights for African Americans, and focus on education and jobs to move forward. He hopes for a future where the South is more involved in the country's conversations, leading to a nation that's more united and understanding.

Harding appointed Taft to be chief justice, a position he held until 1930.
