Summary

"Homo Sum — Volume 01" by Georg Ebers is a historical novel that transports readers to the 4th century, a time of emerging Christianity, following Hermas, son of the hermit Stephanus, as he struggles to find his place. Set against the harsh desert landscape of Mount Sinai, where anchorites sought refuge from the world, the story introduces Hermas, restless and yearning for a life beyond the confines of his upbringing. This desire is ignited further through his interactions with Miriam, a bold shepherdess who represents the world he craves. The narrative captures Hermas' internal conflict as he confronts his father's illness and the strict moral code of the anchorite community. Torn between duty and his own desires, Hermas embarks on a journey filled with passion, turmoil, and challenges to his beliefs, exploring themes of rebellion, freedom, and the search for purpose.
