Summary

"A Most Unholy Trade," Being Letters on the Drama by Henry James is a compilation of four letters from the late 1800s that considers the world of drama with a special focus on Ibsen's "Little Eyolf." These letters, penned to William Heinemann, illustrate James's detailed thoughts on the plays of his time. James discusses the emotional power he found in Ibsen’s work and expresses his wishes for its performance in London. Analyzing the structure of the play, he provides recommendations for enhancing its dramatic impact with a limited number of actors. James also touches upon the tightrope walk between artistic goals and the capability of the viewing audience to understand, while protecting the honesty of the art.
