Summary

"The Emperor's Candlesticks" by Baroness Emmuska Orczy is a historical fiction set against the exciting carnival of imperial Vienna, where secrets and high society combine in a story focused on Tsarevitch Nicholas Alexandrovitch. It appears the Tsarevitch becomes fascinated with a mysterious woman, setting off a chain of events that reveals the dangerous world around him by way of love and political problems. The beginning of the book introduces an opera ball filled with masked figures, where the Tsarevitch, hiding behind a disguise, follows a fascinating odalisque, which leads to a surprising capture. And as the night goes along, it is revealed that his disappearance is not an accident, however, part of a dark plot with serious political reasons.

About the Author

Baroness Emma Orczy, usually known as Baroness Orczy or to her family and friends as Emmuska Orczy, was a Hungarian-born British novelist and playwright. She is best known for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel, the alter ego of Sir Percy Blakeney, a wealthy English fop who turns into a quick-thinking escape artist in order to save French aristocrats from "Madame Guillotine" during the French Revolution, establishing the "hero with a secret identity" in popular culture.
