Summary

"Letters from France" by C. E. W. Bean is an impactful set of letters from the front lines of World War I, focusing on the involvement of the Australian Imperial Force. The book paints a vivid picture of their experiences battling through events such as the struggles around Fromelles and the Somme. The narrative follows Bean's journey to France alongside Australian soldiers in great detail. An early moment shows a military priest inspiring troops on a ship with a message about their cause against the enemy, which sets a respectful tone for the book. Arriving in France, the letters contrast the beauty of the country with the ever-present dangers of war, and through detailed descriptions, the book shows the strong spirit and determination of the soldiers fighting for something bigger than themselves.
