"An Altruist" by Ouida is a story from the late 1800s that introduces us to Wilfrid Bertram, a true believer in altruism, as he tries to convince a group of wealthy people about the problems with wealth and the importance of sharing. Bertram, full of passion, finds himself in his small apartment, trying to get across his groundbreaking ideas about owning things together, but his audience, filled with bored and mocking rich folks, doesn't really care, which makes him feel alone in his beliefs. He talks with people like the negative Lord Marlow and his kind aunt, Lady Southwold, and we see him struggle with the contrast between his ideals and the superficial values of the world around him. Things get even more complicated when he finds out he's getting a big inheritance, which creates even more moral problems as the story goes on.
