Summary

"Overdue: The Story of a Missing Ship" by Harry Collingwood is an adventure that follows Philip Troubridge, a young midshipman, who suddenly finds himself in charge of the ship Mercury after a streak of unfortunate events leaves the crew without a leader. Set on the high seas during the late 1800s, the story begins on the clipper ship Salamis, bound for Melbourne, where a terrible accident results in the death of the second mate and Philip's move to the Mercury. He quickly learns the ship is falling apart and the crew is struggling, all because of a lack of a skilled navigator. The rising pressure turns navigation into a critical fight for survival, setting the stage for daring escapades and unexpected threats out on the open water.
