Summary

"The Virgin of the Sun" by H. Rider Haggard is an early 1920s novel weaving the threads of history and myth from the Inca civilization of Peru. Our protagonist, Hubert of Hastings, driven from his home by misfortune and the threat of the French, seeks a new path in a world turned upside down. The story begins with an editor, captivated by ancient wonders, sharing a tale sourced from a collection of relics, including a mysterious chest discovered in an antiquary's shop. This chest contains artifacts that promise a grand story of love and conflict set in ancient times. The narrative then shifts to Hubert's perspective, revealing his past, his losses; and the chaos that pushes him toward a heroic quest within the captivating and legendary lands of Peru.

About the Author

Sir Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. He was also involved in land reform throughout the British Empire. His stories, situated at the lighter end of Victorian literature and including the eighteen Allan Quatermain stories beginning with King Solomon's Mines, continue to be popular and influential.
