Summary

"To Cuba and Back" by Richard Henry Dana, Jr. is a travel narrative from the 1800’s documenting a trip sailing from Manhattan towards Cuba, vividly sharing the landscapes, people, and events encountered by the author. As the author boards a ship in Manhattan, the story captures not only the beautiful scenery and vivid culture of Cuba but also thoughtfully considers societal and governmental challenges, such as slavery and the relationships between different communities, as the passengers excitedly set sail, and the author recalls moments, while sailing, that include the changing views as the vessel approaches Cuba, as well as a picture perfect depiction of Havana. The writing style is designed to draw the reader in, interweaving personal stories with more extensive social and governmental reflections that suggest the important themes explored throughout the book.

About the Author

Richard Henry Dana Jr. was an American lawyer and politician from Massachusetts, a descendant of a colonial family, who gained renown as the author of the classic American memoir Two Years Before the Mast and as an attorney who successfully represented the U.S. government before the U.S. Supreme Court during the Civil War in the Prize Cases. Both as a writer and as a lawyer, he was a champion of the downtrodden, from seamen to fugitive slaves and freedmen.
