Summary

"Windsor Castle" by William Harrison Ainsworth is a novel that plunges into the world of King Henry VIII and his court at Windsor Castle. It's a story filled with historical events, especially the romance between Anne Boleyn and the King, all painted with detailed descriptions of the castle and its customs. Adding to the mystery is the legend of Herne the Hunter, a spooky ghost that haunts the area which connects to characters like the Earl of Surrey. The story begins with Surrey walking alone in Home Park, remembering his own chilling encounter with Herne the Hunter. He then meets Morgan Fenwolf, a keeper of the forest, who's also worried by strange, ghostly events. This leads to a building sense of suspense as Surrey struggles with whether to believe in the ghost stories, creating a feeling of dread and curiosity about the hunter's spirit and what happens to those who see him.

About the Author

William Harrison Ainsworth was an English historical novelist born at King Street in Manchester. He trained as a lawyer, but the legal profession held no attraction for him. While completing his legal studies in London he met the publisher John Ebers, at that time manager of the King's Theatre, Haymarket. Ebers introduced Ainsworth to literary and dramatic circles, and to his daughter, who became Ainsworth's wife.
