Summary

"Cardinal Pole; Or, The Days of Philip and Mary: An Historical Romance" by William Harrison Ainsworth is a historical novel that plunges into the dramatic era of Queen Mary I's reign and her alliance with Philip of Spain, investigating themes of power struggles, religious disputes, and national loyalty. The narrative revolves around powerful figures like Queen Mary, King Philip, and Cardinal Pole, whose entangled relationships and opposing interests steer the storyline amidst a politically charged climate. As the story unfolds, Emperor Charles V suggests the strategic marriage between Queen Mary and Philip, aiming to expand his dominance across Europe, resulting in significant disagreement among Mary's closest advisors. Cardinal Pole, a noble character previously banished, re-emerges as a key player, embodying Catholic beliefs within an England torn between conflicting religious views. The initial parts of the novel create a complex setting, revealing the characters' motivations and signalling the disruptions that lie ahead concerning the anticipated royal union.

About the Author

William Harrison Ainsworth was an English historical novelist born at King Street in Manchester. He trained as a lawyer, but the legal profession held no attraction for him. While completing his legal studies in London he met the publisher John Ebers, at that time manager of the King's Theatre, Haymarket. Ebers introduced Ainsworth to literary and dramatic circles, and to his daughter, who became Ainsworth's wife.
