Summary

"A Sovereign Remedy" by Flora Annie Steel is a story set in the early 1900s. It kicks off with a funny meeting between two young guys who happen to share the same name, Edward Cruttenden, when they bump into each other while biking through the pretty Welsh countryside. They quickly bond over being orphans and having different social classes, which starts a conversation about how random wealth and privilege can be. Right away, the two Edwards become friends and joke about their lives. After their accident, they chill by a pool, chatting about money and class issues. Their friendly moment gets interrupted when a clergyman and a doctor show up, each giving their thoughts on wealth and what it means. The beginning has a chatty feel, bringing up ideas about social status, who we are, and trying to be happy even when things are uncertain, setting the stage for the changing friendships and adventures that are coming.
