Summary

"In Bad Company, and Other Stories" by Rolf Boldrewood is a collection that captures the essence of Australia's early days through compelling tales. One story follows Bill Hardwick, an Australian shearer, whose life is upended by societal shifts and union arguments. With his wife, Jenny, by his side, Bill navigates the challenges of a changing world. From introducing Bill's strong work ethic and aspirations for a good life, the arrival of Janus Stoate brings conflict. Stoate's socialist views clash with Jenny’s traditional values, creating tension. Bill finds himself caught in the middle of shearers, employers, and a political minefield and now must face tests to his values and relationships. With themes of work, family, and community, this collection paints a vivid picture of a country in transition.
