Summary

"The Orchid" by Robert Grant is a story set in the early 1900s, chronicling the life of Lydia Arnold. She is a bright young woman caught between the pressures of love and high-society expectations in her wealthy hunting community. At the heart of the Westfield Hunt Club, she is considered by Herbert Maxwell, a wealthy man, and is getting pressure to marry him, all while dealing with all of the admiration and curiosity from everyone around her. Her relationship becomes more complicated with the arrival of Harry Spencer, a cool new person who throws Lydia's life into a mess of new paths. Through her friendships, especially with Mrs. Walter Cole, Lydia challenges social norms and chases her wants of love and a fulfilling, rich life.
