"The Second String" by Nat Gould is a story set in the early 1900s about a good-natured young man named Jack Redland, who’s seen as a failure by his family. Despite this, Jack keeps a positive attitude as he tries to make something of himself. After a chance meeting with a gypsy who tells him he'll find riches overseas, Jack decides to seek his fortune abroad and leave England behind. He prepares to set sail for Fremantle, hoping for success and adventure, even as he deals with his feelings for a woman named Winifred.
