Summary

"Sir Quixote of the Moors" by John Buchan is a tale about Jean de Rohaine, a discouraged French gentleman who finds himself lost in the tough Scottish Highlands. The story looks at ideas such as honor, friendship, and the difference between peaceful country life and the often cruel truths of the world, which Jean learns about while being in a strange place. We first meet Jean as he heads out into the Scottish moors, showing how annoyed and uncomfortable he feels in the gloomy landscape, which is very different from his life back in France. He remembers coming to Scotland to see his friend Quentin Kennedy, but he becomes upset with his host's violent and unkind behavior, ultimately losing all hope for a good friendship. After a big argument about a terrible act of violence, Jean leaves Kennedy and gets lost on the moors. After facing many hardships, he finally makes it to an inn, where he encounters danger from the local troublemakers. The beginning of the novel shows how Jean starts to change and introduces the struggles and adventures that define this journey through Scotland.
