"Servants of the Guns" by Jeffery E. (Jeffery Eardley) Jeffery is a war story about soldiers in World War I and their hard lives in the trenches. It shows the big changes in how wars were fought back then. We see the story through the eyes of a young officer who is in charge of a group of soldiers, and how they had to get used to the terrible things happening around them. The book talks about the tough parts of being in a war, but also shows how soldiers can be good friends, strong, and able to change when things get hard. At the beginning, the main character thinks about how different things are now compared to when they first started fighting. As the officer travels by train through a destroyed area, he remembers when they all felt like friends and sure they would win, which is very different from the sad and messy situation they are in now. He talks to other soldiers, like a young officer called "The Child," who has already gone through a lot, showing how the war has made them grow up fast. The first parts of the book make you feel the sadness and importance of doing what you are told, giving up things for others, and the strange and unfair parts of a war that has changed a lot from what it was supposed to be.
