Summary

"Slave Narratives: A Folk History of Slavery in the United States" is a collection of interviews and stories assembled by the Federal Writers' Project. This anthology shares the firsthand memories of formerly enslaved people, giving a human voice to a dark period in American history by exploring what life was like under slavery, from the labor in the fields to the small joys and the ever-present shadow of cruelty; the narratives capture the essence of daily life on plantations, including family bonds, interactions with owners, the struggle for survival amid hardship, and glimpses of resistance and resilience, all told from the heart.
