Summary

"Religion and the Rise of Capitalism: A Historical Study" by R. H. Tawney is a historical exploration of how religious ideas and society were linked as the world shifted from medieval times to modern times. The book looks into how changes in religious beliefs affected the way people did business. The author examines social morals and how thoughts about economics changed, especially during important times in history. Tawney sets out to follow religious thinking about social and economic problems up to the 1700s. He highlights the important connection between religious changes and the economic changes that happened during the Renaissance and Reformation. He mentions other smart people and how they helped us understand social ethics, paving the way for him to investigate how old ideas about morality and economic practices were replaced by newer ideas, which questions the basis of economic behavior based on religious values.

About the Author

Richard Henry Tawney was an English economic historian, social critic, ethical socialist, Christian socialist, and important proponent of adult education. The Oxford Companion to British History (1997) explained that Tawney made a "significant impact" in these "interrelated roles". A. L. Rowse goes further by insisting that "Tawney exercised the widest influence of any historian of his time, politically, socially and, above all, educationally".
