Summary

"Cartoons by Sir John Tenniel, Selected from the Pages of 'Punch'" by John Tenniel is a compilation of political cartoons from the British magazine "Punch," that offers a glimpse into Victorian-era Britain through satire and wit. Covering fifty years, it shows how society and politics changed, from the 1850s to the start of the 1900s, using humor and art. Each cartoon comes with a short explanation to help readers understand the historical background, including the main events and feelings of the time. Tenniel uses his art to comment on social problems, political happenings, and important people, offering a strong view on British imperialism, home policies, and relationships with other countries, and uses symbols like the British Lion to comment on events like the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the Boer War, inviting readers to think about the past's political scene through entertaining drawings.
