Summary

"Prometheus Bound and the Seven Against Thebes" by Aeschylus is a compilation of two ancient Greek plays that highlight the struggle against unfair rule and the disastrous results of human battles. "Prometheus Bound" tells the story of Prometheus, who is chained up by Jupiter for giving fire to the people, diving into questions of suffering and authority through his interactions with Strength, Force, and Vulcan, who are forced to punish him. Contrasting Prometheus's gift to humanity with Jupiter's harsh treatment, the play explores themes of power and betrayal. Meanwhile, "The Seven Against Thebes" centers on Eteocles as he gathers his people to defend Thebes, bringing to light the consequences of war as the characters' destinies lead them down fateful paths.

About the Author

Aeschylus was an ancient Greek tragedian often described as the father of tragedy. Academic knowledge of the genre begins with his work, and understanding of earlier Greek tragedy is largely based on inferences made from reading his surviving plays. According to Aristotle, he expanded the number of characters in the theatre and allowed conflict among them. Formerly, characters interacted only with the chorus.
