Summary

"Apu Ollantay: A Drama of the Time of the Incas" by Sir Clements R. Markham is a historical play set in the Inca Empire around 1470 examines love, rebellion, and political games. The story centers on Ollantay, a brave chief who is not of royal blood, and his secret love for Cusi Coyllur, the Inca's daughter. The play begins with Ollantay and his clever helper, Piqui Chaqui, talking about Ollantay's strong feelings for the princess, even though Piqui Chaqui warns him that this love is dangerous. Then, Uillac Uma, the High Priest, arrives and advises Ollantay to avoid pursuing his feelings, because the Inca Pachacuti will be angry. The scene introduces many struggles such as personal, political, and social problems, and the play looks at how power, love, and loyalty worked together in the Inca world.
