Summary

"Character" by Samuel Smiles is a book focused on the significance of character in the growth of people and society. It underscores morals, obligations, and good qualities as vital in forming individuals and communities. Using stories of people from the past, it explains how character affects what people do and society itself. The beginning makes it clear that the book will discuss the main ideas of what character is and how it shapes life. Smiles starts with wise words from famous thinkers and then shares his thoughts on how character is more important than being smart or rich. He says that real success comes from having strong morals and that being great means doing your best, no matter who you are. The book teaches that how you act every day shows your character better than big accomplishments, using examples of famous people to back up these ideas.

About the Author

Samuel Smiles was a British author and government reformer. Although he campaigned on a Chartist platform, he promoted the idea that more progress would come from new attitudes than from new laws. His primary work, Self-Help (1859), promoted thrift and claimed that poverty was caused largely by irresponsible habits, while also attacking materialism and laissez-faire government. It has been called "the bible of mid-Victorian liberalism" and had lasting effects on British political thought.
