Summary

"Journal of a Voyage to Lisbon" by Henry Fielding is a blend of personal stories and social opinions told through the lens of a man traveling to Lisbon in the 1700s while dealing with sickness. The story follows Fielding's thoughts and feelings as he embarks on this trip, showing his views on travel, how people act, and what society expects. He uses humor to make light of his situation and reflects deeply on his life. Right away, Fielding talks about his poor health and his feelings as he gets ready to leave London, explaining how he said goodbye to his family and accepted what was happening to him. The start of his trip is not smooth, with delays caused by the ship's captain, which reveals the everyday problems of traveling and Fielding's sharp observations of people, especially the sailors and who has power on the ship. This opening sets the stage for a story that looks at both the physical trip to Lisbon and the author's internal struggle with his own death.

About the Author

Henry Fielding was an English writer and magistrate known for the use of humour and satire in his works. His 1749 comic novel The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling was a seminal work in the genre. Along with Samuel Richardson, Fielding is seen as the founder of the traditional English novel. He also played an important role in the history of law enforcement in the United Kingdom, using his authority as a magistrate to found the Bow Street Runners, London's first professional police force.
