Summary

"The Goddess of Reason: A Drama in Five Acts" by Mary Johnston is a story set during the French Revolution, where the lives of nobles and peasants collide in a world of big changes and power struggles. The play follows René-Amaury de Vardes, a new Baron caught between his noble background and the anger of the peasants he now rules, especially Yvette, who stands for the common people's fight for freedom. As guests gather and talk about the revolution, it becomes clear that the lower classes are not happy with how things are, and a Deputy named Rémond Lalain's excitement for the revolution clashes with the lifestyle of the rich. Yvette, a peasant girl, is believed to have a significant role in the revolution, as she struggles with who she is and how she feels about the noble who controls her life. The play opens the door to conflicts and the difficulties of society, setting the scene for a story about loyalty, class, and the search for justice.
