"Marjorie" by Justin H. McCarthy is a turn-of-the-century tale that unfolds in a peaceful Sussex town, chronicling the life of Raphael Crowninshield and his longing for a life of daring adventure on the open sea. The narrative centers on the evolving friendship between Raphael and Lancelot Amber, as well as Raphael's growing, and often complicated, feelings for a girl named Barbara. We meet young Raphael in his hometown of Sendennis as he wrestles with wanting to go out to sea while also trying to manage what his parents, who are shopkeepers, want for him.
