Summary

"Mendel's Principles of Heredity: A Defence" by William Bateson is a scientific book that explains and supports Gregor Mendel's ideas about heredity, including a translated version of his original research on pea plants. The book explores how Mendel's work is important to understanding evolution and inheritance, showing how genes are passed down. Bateson's introduction talks about how Mendel's discoveries were not initially accepted in the science community and discusses criticisms from others, like Professor Weldon, and argues that more people should learn about Mendel's work to encourage more research into heredity, suggesting it could lead to big improvements in what we know about genetics.

About the Author

William Bateson was an English biologist who was the first person to use the term genetics to describe the study of heredity, and the chief populariser of the ideas of Gregor Mendel following their rediscovery in 1900 by Hugo de Vries and Carl Correns. His 1894 book Materials for the Study of Variation was one of the earliest formulations of the new approach to genetics.
