Summary

"St. Elmo" by Augusta J. Evans is a tale from the 1800s that follows Edna Earl, a young girl whose happy world crumbles after witnessing a deadly duel. Her innocent view of life is destroyed as she struggles with loss, loneliness, and the meaning of honor in a world filled with violence and unfairness. Her life in the peaceful Tennessee countryside takes a dark turn after she stumbles upon the brutal duel; as she grapples with death and morality, further tragedy strikes with the loss of her grandfather, pushing her to leave her childhood behind and discover a new path. This sets the stage for a deep look at character and society as Edna transitions from a sheltered child to face the difficult truths of adulthood.
