Summary

"Selected Poems of Francis Thompson" by Francis Thompson, is a compilation of poems from the late 1800s that covers topics like being a child, affection, and religion, which shows the author's big feelings and detailed writing style. These poems show Thompson's difficulties and dreams, usually grabbing people's attention with bright pictures and smart thoughts. The first part of the book has poems about being young and strong feelings. Some poems are for children, talking about how they are pure and how their beauty does not last long, kind of like in the poem "Daisy." Plus, there are writings such as "The Making of Viola," that mix godly and real-life amazing things, explaining how he likes to combine secret things with normal stuff. These starting pieces prepare the reader for the writer's look into affection and sadness, leading people into Thompson's universe using heartfelt and powerful words.

About the Author

At the behest of his father, a doctor, he entered medical school at the age of 18, but at 26 left home to pursue his talent as a writer and poet. He spent three years on the streets of London, supporting himself with menial labour, becoming addicted to opium which he took to relieve a nervous problem.
