Summary

"The Girl of the Period, and Other Social Essays, Vol. 2" by E. Lynn Linton is a series of observations about 1800s society, particularly focusing on the changing roles of men and women. Linton examines the behavior of overly emotional men, or "gushing men," and the reactions they provoke in society. She argues that a "gushing man" is mocked, while women are quicker to forgive flaws in men with other positive qualities. In other essays, Linton considers the challenges young women face as they approach adulthood, how they cope with the pressure from society and figure out how to find their place. Linton uses her words to reveal the eccentricities and truths of the norms of her time.

About the Author

Eliza Lynn Linton was the first female salaried journalist in Britain and the author of over 20 novels. Despite her path-breaking role as an independent woman, many of her essays took a strong anti-feminist slant.
