Summary

"An Essay Upon Projects" by Daniel Defoe is a book from the late 1600s that looks at different ideas for making society better, both with money and morals, and it shows off Defoe's forward-thinking ideas on fixing economics and social problems. He suggests different projects to get people thinking about how to make things better and be responsible. He talks about things like banks, taxes, and how schools are set up. The book starts by talking about "projecting" as a way to deal with the tough needs and money problems society had during war times. Defoe points out how economic problems hurt businesses and people, which made people come up with new ideas. He uses stories from the past and his own experiences to explain his points, connecting personal effort with being responsible to society. He talks about ideas for setting up banks, making public things like roads better, and dealing with poverty, giving helpful thoughts that still matter today when we talk about money projects and how society is run.

About the Author

Daniel Defoe was an English novelist, journalist, merchant, pamphleteer and spy. He is most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719, which is claimed to be second only to the Bible in its number of translations. He has been seen as one of the earliest proponents of the English novel, and helped to popularise the form in Britain with others such as Aphra Behn and Samuel Richardson. Defoe wrote many political tracts, was often in trouble with the authorities, and spent a period in prison. Intellectuals and political leaders paid attention to his fresh ideas and sometimes consulted him.
