Summary

"Revenge" by Arthur Porges is a science fiction story about a biochemist whose revolutionary idea to end drug addiction backfires. Driven by frustration with society's inaction on the drug crisis, the protagonist creates a virus to destroy the opium poppy. After being dismissed by indifferent government officials, he unleashes the virus himself, succeeding in eliminating the opium plant worldwide, however, he is then ignored and unappreciated. Embittered, he plans further retribution against humanity by engineering viruses to eradicate yeast and tobacco, aiming to punish society for not recognizing his genius and addressing the drug problem.
