Summary

"The Outdoor Girls at Rainbow Lake; Or, The Stirring Cruise of the Motor Boat Gem" by Laura Lee Hope is an early 1900's story about a group of young women ready for a summer adventure. The girls, led by Betty, are anticipating a visit from her Uncle Amos, a sea captain with a surprise in store. This sets the scene for a lake cruise full of friendship, possible risks, and discovering the outdoors. We meet Betty Nelson and her friends as they eagerly await her big news, their chatter revealing the group’s personalities. When Betty shares that her uncle is coming, the other girls are immediately curious and excited. Even little events like Grace having to rush off on horseback for special paperwork shows signs of fun to come. As the girls prepare for their journey to Rainbow Lake on the motorboat Gem, they are met with surprises, like an unsettling rumor of ghosts at Elm Island.
